Ok Heres my two cents for what it is worth. I have handfed & raised ALL the Macaws, save the Hyacinth & the Scarlet. I am a Macaw person so have never met a bad one. That being said, they are as individual as you and I! Folks please don't' generalize when talking about any animal. I would not recommend, for instance a Blue Throat macaw, or the Red Fronts for a novice owner. They can be very mechanical & take apart their cage & anyone Else's. ( Had that happen lol) I had the most wonderful Green Wing macaw that would go to anyone, man, woman or child. She played in the floor like a puppy & would cuddle like a baby, I could even vacuum her!! However she also was let out of her cage by the Blue Throat one day when I was gone for repair supplies & when I got home "Maggie Mae" had taken a window out of the frame. I re-homed her later that wk.(in a weak moment) as hubby is not a parrot enthusiast, & still tear up over her!!! I do get photos of her & could visit if she weren't' so far away. But I digress. Macaws can be destructive, you just have to be care to keep cages away from the wall & watch them as you would a small child, when they are out of their cage. Keep plenty of toys they can chew up. Yes, bought toys can be very expensive. How ever I haven't bought a toy in ages!!!!! Paper towel rolls, scrape from the lumber yard ( make sure not to get "treated" wood), adding machine paper. They make a toy for this. Really! One time purchase. Also they make a "cage' type toy that can be refilled with lots of things. Cardboard boxes.Need I go on? LOL Macaws do require some thought into diet. Some species such as the Hyacinth need LOTS of nuts & fruit & vegies. Other macaws need nuts just not in that quantity. In the wild & NOT Australia, macaws come from South America, they eat nuts & fruits. If you have any other ?s you can PM me. Kay
